PUKE COLOUR! The surf is a bit junky looking today and is around 12 feet at 12 seconds. The wind is a non issue, and your best bet is North Chestermans although i doubt it will be the day of the year. In other news, with encouragement from my coworker Lisa, I have decided that my 2011 New Years Resolution is to sing Iron Maidens "Hallowed be Thy Name" at karaoke. This is a big commitment cause for one, I am the worst singer in the world (but i do have stage presence) and secondly the bar does not have this song on file so I will have to make them get it. By doing this I will help to prove Lisa's theory that everyone can sing. Also I can pay homage to an amazing power ballad that has spent its life in the shadow of "Run to the Hills" and possibly create world peace by doing so.

Cox Bay or Wick Beach are the calls for today. The surf looks clean as can be with light winds from the East and seas of around 6 feet at 9 seconds.
We are getting in to the month countdown until our staff trip to Costa Rica!! We will be closed from Jan 3-31 so that we can go get some warm waves! Today is the day of sign making, this task is only made harder when the modern day Sharpie runs out after 34seconds of colouring in. As if staying within the lines isn't tough enough! They don't make Sharpies like they used to...too much focus on fancy colours and newfangled technology.

Good news! The surf has bumped up to around 7 feet at 7 seconds so we can retire our long boards again. Also the temp has warmed up and all my friends' taps have thawed so they can start practicing hygiene again! Yay! Just a heads up that on Friday and Saturday we are having a big pre Xmas sale! BBBBRRRRRRRRRR!!! Its freezing outside!! If you can brave it, the waves are around 4.5 feet at 8 seconds with no wind. I might giver a go cause I've got no excuse since I treated myself to the ripcurl H-Bomb heated suit....its pretty sweet. Kinda like wearing an electric blanket on your back while surfing. Another beautiful and crisp day here! Today we have some light winds from the ENE giving every beach offshore winds...what a treat. The surf is around 7 feet at 6 seconds....with a small interval like that i'd check out Cox Bay or Wick.

i know, i know, its been awhile since we blogged.
and not much has changed! the surf is huge today, don't go in the water its really not a good idea. going to 9 meters, that's about 30ft for those of you not metrically inclined...right now its around 22ft. and we have a high tide at around 1:30pm today of 11.5 feet so the beach should be a mess around then. also, it would be nice if it could just rain a little harder. my roof didn't quite cave in last night, poor effort really...

So the surf's been big time the last few days...solid winter waves. The salt water hasn't stopped dripping out of my brain since tuesday. This is the time of year where students seem to get the most out of their lessons. I think it's the sick adrenaline rush they get as 15 foot waves break behind them and their instructor gives them the go ahead to paddle in...props to everyone for getting out there. Major props to Pete Devries for the radical 12 foot air he pulled yesterday afternoon while we were teaching...and yes I entirely lost track of my students for a few brief moments. Even if you're not into having the fear of the almighty put into you while standing in a wet rubber faxcimile of a bat suit it's a great time to watch the waves roll into our beaches. I paddled out at cox thursday afternoon and these massive lefts were breaking from the old path right across to sunset point. I was way outside the first set that came in so I just watched it go by in awe. Sunny beautiful peeling faces. I got into a few and had the best time I've had on my backside in months! Yah, thats right. That was me on CBC radio this morning. Could you tell I was so nervous I wanted to barf? I'm pretty sure that my household slept through it, but you can always count on Zoe to be listening.
CBC was calling to talk about the Queen of the Peak Surf Competition. The surf comp is going off!! We already have 29 girls registered for the Shortboard (max 32) and 16 for the longboard. Thanks again to everyone for your support with the event....its going to be awesome!!

Ok, so technology let me down last night. I checked my cheaty phone app and saw that cox bay was 6.6 feet at 8 seconds and got all amped up. I suited up hopped in my car and drove to Cox. I blindly skipped down the path along the way I may have peed myself to ensure that i had to go out. When I got down to the beach I saw some big ass ugly waves. "thats the biggest 6 feet @ 8 seconds i've ever seen!" Like an idiot I still insisted on paddling out. After a bizillion duck dives I got to the outside to see some BOMBS rolling in! Only then did I realise what a moron I was, my phone had lied to me, turns out if you don't refresh it, it tells you what was happening 8 hours earlier. After catching a few evil walls of death I came to the conclusion my time would be better spent on the couch wearing sweatpants.

Today however, there is a wave at North but it is mach 10 offshore

Ahhh, our favorite month is finally here! The name hasn't let us down either as the swell is again around 5 feet at 10 seconds. Cox Bay has been pretty fun the last couple of days so thats where I'd be headed if I wasnt here.

Wow...the last blog day was a long time ago....sorry about that. August slammed us with her foggy wrath but we've finally broken through and are enjoying some well deserved sunshine. Things here have been pretty crazy...good crazy...but crazy. The volvo is enjoying its renewed life as a pink beach mobile and getting many 'props' from people.
The surf has been suprinsingly fun, although its dropped since yesterday. Today is around 3.5-4 feet at 8 seconds. Your best bet is to grab a longboard and some friends and head to either Cox or Wick Beach.

Alright so I'm sitting here waiting to hear the fate of Dominga who (against the surf sister summer rules) was skateboarding at the park yesterday and got run down by some kook and she fell on her wrist! Is it broken or not? We dunno....gotta wait for the xray tech to decide that one.
Remember that in every sport there is etiquette that we have to follow....same goes for surfing and skateboarding so innocent people like Dominga dont get plowed down by some out of control goof. Fingers crossed that its just a sprain........

here's something to ponder: while trying to find out how many ants it would take to lift n average human, i came across this more interesting questions:

How many fire ants does it take to reach the moon?

well,

It is 1.410^10 inches from the earth to the moon and a fire ant is about 1/4 an inch so that is approximately 5.610^10 ants

while i don't fully understand the relevance of the question, i couldn't help but share it.

Good morning!!! We've got some fun waves out there today. Surf is around 6 feet at 8 seconds with light winds. This morning we are taking Chris Gailus and his wife Jane from Global TV out surfing with us! I'm a big Global TV fan, so its pretty exciting for me, plus it impressed my dad which is always a cool thing.
On another note, where was everybody last night? A few of the sisters and I shredded the gnar out of Long Beach and we were the only ones out!?! There was a fun south swell and no wind which made for perfect longboarding conditions....should have been there.

update in the surf world: Joel Parkinson will not be able to surf in the upcoming Billanbong Pro ASP world tour event at Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa next week due to a gnarly sliced foot while surfing at Snapper Rocks on July 8th.
sooooo thats why you should come surf with us!!! booties, sand bottom and soft fins really help the situation when you are trying to avoid getting your body sliced up.

its monday everyone, and the much hyped south swell has yet to show its elusive face at local beaches with cox bay being the cleanest and biggest surf found so far on dominga's search this morning.

what i might be even more excited for is the also much hyped arrival of summer...we are forecast to get temperatures in the mid twenties all week...hot weather? south swell? is it too good to be true? usually. except for this one time...

you can tell its summer because the shop has been fairly busy and lessons were full this afternoon! but apparently the world still wants it to be winter because the sun has not been out yet today.
Why is it that every summer we all get so excited thinking about the warmth that is meant to come with this season, but it seems that every year we wait in growing dissapointment as we watch the rest of the country heat up to plus 30 and we are still in the early teens. Then finally the sun will break through for about a week of gloriousness and everyone will go buck wild.
But a good way to heat it up tonight will be at the FASHION SHOW which is junglerodeo themed (????what is that??)... so if your feeling a little chilly come out and get your hottness on while you watch us strut (or stumble) our way down the runway!

sunday is a bit of a dreary type of day
apparently the surf is 3.3ft at 17 seconds from a slight southerly direction which could make for some good longboarding.
slam's just gone off to do a quick snack run which also includes but is not limited to vinegar.
i seem to have sparkles plastered into my skin from last night still hopefully they will last for another day and then they can come back out to shine for the fashion show tomorrow night. which everyone should come check out!

Little south swell doing its thing 2-3 @ 14 seconds. Bust out your long board and head to a south facing beach to maximize the fun.

I know it's a common fear that surfing in Canada is cold, and yes I guess relatively speaking it is, you know compared to say Costa Rica or Fiji. BUT seriously people think about, do you honestly believe we'd still be in business if everyone who took a lesson suffered severe hypothermia. Those of you who 'really feel the cold' (somewhere between 98 and 99% of people who sign up) you're not a minority predestined to experience something untoward; frostbite doesn't happen, YOU WILL NOT GET COLD IN JUNE, if you do Krissy will rub A535 all over your body with a heated spatula.

What is the stench, it is truly foul, the girls tried to blame it on Krissy, a fair assumption, I tried to blame it on Mike, an even more likely scenario...however it turns out we don't know what it is, best guess is a burst sewer main. 6 feet @ 10 seconds with LIGHT winds! I had to capitalize light to express my joy. Needless to say the wind has been a bit of a cantankerous whore lately (did you like my big word drop there?)

Steph just questions whether or not my usage of the word whore was appropriate on the blog. I said, 'hey, we can do whatever we want' and then she reminded me that using words like 'whore' probably wasn't a sound business decision. Speaking of business, Surf Sister (believe it or not) was not my original dream job. (shocking, I know!) My earliest dream job was to be a fairy princess, when that didn't pan out, I later wrote in my grade one journal that I wanted to win the lottery. (ambitious, i know) As years went on my next dream job was to have a television show called 'Rye in my Eye'. The TV show would involve me sitting on a couch with my friends whilst drinking rye while 'guests' present us with new ideas or play music and I use the truth serum powers of rye to tell them what i really think of their stuff. Hollywood never came knocking, but the opportunity to run a kick ass (yup Steph, I just wrote 'ass') Surf Shop/Surf School did, so here I am....and in hindsight its a hell of alot better than being a fairy princess because I can wear sweatpants to work and write dirty words on our blog without upsetting royalty.

I was really stuck as to what to say today, that is in part due to our recent return from Steph's stagette, where I seem to have mislaid a brain cell or two.

Krissy then prompted me to write about the fact it truly is now stagette season, which then lead us into a more spiritual discussion loosely based around such events; I mean, in theory at least it is the last major party before you settle down and start darning socks of an evening, and never make eye contact with another boy ever again, SO why on earth would you want to spend the last few precious moments in an all girl environment, here's why:

- more than likely your friends are awesome, and at least one of them will do something so monumentally stupid you'll laugh about for the rest of your life.
-sunglasses were invented for perving without getting caught.
-if you never wash your socks, they're less likely to get holes - science. So darning can be replaced by a something way better.

All in all thanks everyone, I had a fantastic time, and I'm sure if I eat the page out the newspaper with the sudoko on it I'll retrieve a couple of those misplaced brain cells.

Summer is here!!! Well at least until tomorrow. I was so excited to get dressed today and I even called my sister (who's birthday it is today) to consult on what to wear as all my summer clothes have been sitting in the closet waiting for this day to come. In the end I chose a dress, and despite my legs being cold, I am happy.

Todays surf is around 4.5 feet at 8 seconds with light NW winds.

What is the Danger Zone anyways? and apparently theres a highway leading there....why? because there is so much traffic? To me, the Danger Zone is somewhere between beers number 4 and 5, when I start thinking that no one can hear me talking about them and I think that 'shots' are a good idea. So, it turns out if you have a bag of plain corn chips but no salsa, it isn't the best idea to pour white vinegar into the bag in order to try and turn them into 'salt and vinegar', ultimately it just results in soggy plain corn chips. For more life lessons/coaching feel free to contact us...

So, yesterday's hot topic was loosely based around the difference between a Possum and an Opossum, and after an exhausting stint of research here are my conclusions (all of which a re directly plagiarised);

Some believe that possums and opossums are both the same animal. This is quite incorrect, however.

The "possum" of North America is just a shorter name for an opossum, but true possums are different from opossums, and not related at all, except by virtue of both animals being marsupials.

Possums belong to the family Phalangeridae and order Marsupialia, while opossums belong to the order Didelphimorphia, although they are also marsupials.
Opossums are found only in North America, although there is a "water possum", also known as the yapok, which is found in central and South America.
True possums are found in New Guinea, Australia (including Tasmania), Sulawesi (Indonesia) and a few other small islands in the Pacific region. Although not native to New Zealand, the brush-tailed possum was introduced into that country over a century ago and has subsequently become a pest.

OK, so I'm, 99% sure that I just saw Owen Wilson drive by the shop. (Crap!! I just broke the drawer that my foot was resting on....alright, its 'fixed' now...back to my rant)
Town is a bit strange right now. Your odds of running into a majour celeb seem to be better than catching a decent sized wave. Last night we were feeling a bit 'stalky' so we drove down to the docks and checked out the set. All the signs around the dock have been changed to say Coos Bay, Oregon....felt like I was on vacation. Speaking of vacation, I'm on my way to California for a week. Hopefully gonna get my bronze on and catch some warmish waves. I must say I am kinda bummed about the timing, cause it would be funny to see Jack Black, Owen Wilson or Steve Martin walking around Tofino, plus it looks like a fun south swell is going to fill in for the weekend and Saturday and Sundays surf is shaping up really nice.

There's a fun south swell in the water thats lighting up all the beaches and there is surf galore out there (compared to the wave drought we've had)
Last night we kicked off the summer season by having a beach fire, bbq and sunset surf at long beach. It was an awesome evening despite the fact that MY FACE GOT IN A FIGHT WITH MY SURFBOARD!! Yah, the whole 'cover your head' thing didnt really happen and it looks like an alien is growing out of my forehead. All i can say is THANK GOD for the 'emo' bang sweep so i'm pulling off the look fairly well.
Reminder about the garage sale at Long Beach Surf Shop today. there's some deals to be had.

The buoy is back, so I don't feel lost anymore! Today's conditions as of this morning are
8 feet at 11 seconds with WNW winds (boooo!) If you have time and the desire I'd venture into the park and check out Florencia Bay. The 5 day surf forecast is looking pretty blah to be honest. The unsettled spring air is giving us some funky winds so as of now it looks like the best surf days are Sunday and Monday...which incidentaly coincides with my days off. (High five to Mother Nature)

my dog has been acting all weird lately...like barking at the forest, acting sketchy on the walk to work...and so has krissy's dog, and we live in yelling distance of each other. and today we find out that someone who lives on my street was walking home the other night, turned around, and there was a COUGAR behind her???!!!!!

so its monday, and guess what. still no buoy report. NDBC station 46206 what are you doing with your life?!!! so once again we are forced to do it the old fashioned way. me and the pen-dog ran at chestermans this morning and this is what we saw:

south had some size...there must still be some south swell in the water. pretty clean looking, but we all know that south chestermans is all tricks unless the wedge is working, which it wasnt.

north was a bit messier, more size across the beach than there has been lately, but not as nice and clean as the last few days.

and there's definitely something dead and rotting near henry's. penny was right into it but we didn't see anything.

so how's that for a report? the rest is up to you.
watch out for dead bodies or rotting sea lions.

What are you doing on your computer? You should be shredding at Wick or Cox Bay today....thats where I'd be if I wasnt stuck here. Feel sorry for me, its my birthday (for real) and I'm at work. Ok, dont feel sorry for me, I made the schedule. I figured it was a good way to see all my friends on my birthday plus we have a cookie stash at the shop right now.

Today is also Saturday, which reminds me of a conversation I had with my roomate. We were at some sweet hip hop show and the MC was rapping about 'saturday' and how it was awesome. I was like "why hype up saturday? everyone knows saturday rules. why not try to get people stoked about tuesdays or wednesdays, cause they suck." Think about it. There are tonnes of songs out there already about Saturdays, but no love for tuesdays. Maybe thats how I'll make my millions. By writing a song that hypes the mid week. Actually, my sister and her roomate so elequently renamed wednesday 'little saturday', cause they couldnt wait a whole week without doing something fun. I like it. Monday, tuesday, 'little saturday, thursday, friday, saturday, sunday....thats more like it.

Red is for my anger that the bouy is still down, so I dont actually know what the surf is doing today. For those to lazy to actually go to the beach (or too far away) you can also cheat the surf check by going onto www.surfcams.ca and you can see what the beaches are doing more or less.
Green is for the envy I have for people with this beautiful day off. Its sunny and warm and if I wasnt working I'd be at Wick or Cox Bay.
On another note, last night when I was eating my dinner I pondered 'what ever happend to potatoe skins?'!? Remember when you could order potatoe skins of any menu? They where sweet and at one point right along side nachos and chicken fingers. But over time they've disappeared along with nicknames like "Goose" or "Boner".......
I think i'm going to make them tonight.

sunny again! how exciting. and we had our first BBQ of the season last night.

the surf is looking a bit bigger than yesterday...6.6 ft at 16 sec, winds ESE. I don't even know...probably Cox Bay is the best bet, but that interval could mean some sets at North too...

another new disovery for us...there's a website called www.surfcam.ca that has webcams at Wick, South, North, Cox, even McKenzie!! Why ever leave your house to check the beach again? Sorry dogs, but your morning walks have just been made obsolete.

Here's a thought...why do people order americanos and then get them in those huge gas station travel mugs? its two shots of espresso...isn't it all watered down and lame when you put it in one of those things? i have this ocd thing about the size of mug that i can drink an americano out of. like 12oz is the max otherwise what's the point? you're basically just drinking water with a bit of brown caffeine in it. do even taste the deliciousness of the coffee? i think its an aesthetic thing too...i just don't like how those mugs look.
this doesn't mean that i'll judge you or think any less of you if you bring one in and order a coffee...just think about what you're doing with that mug and ask yourself.." is this mug really right for me or is there a better world of coffee out there waiting for me?"

it is saturday folks, but basically its monday for me. so happy monday everyone. maybe we could call it "mondurday".

so it is a gorgeous mondurday, sunny and sort of warm, which is totally better than not warm at all. right?

and today the surf is looking alright...i was at cox bay teaching this morning and its clean and looks around shoulder high. reports are that it was fun unless you got sucked down into the pro-hole in the corner. in case anyone's wondering what a "pro-hole" is, its a new word that Kar made up after experiencing it today...its when you're surfing and the rip pulls you down into the corner at Cox where all the pros are out getting radical in a dense little pack and no matter what you try to do about it, you just can't escape it. people are just busting airs on your head and you're generally stressed out. so there you go. prohole.

Good Friday...whats so good about it? We cancelled our lessons this morning because we didnt feel like having our students blow away. The good news is that the wind is supposed to ease up throughout the day and in theory it should be surfable tomorrow.
